Trump's Woke Alarm Misses The Continent's Real Danger: Technological Decline.

Donald Trump's security policy document presents a flawed view of the European Union. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "progressive" policies pose an existential threat to the continent's identity. However, this argument rests on a serious misinterpretation of the reality. The actual challenge facing the EU is not cultural but economic and technological backwardness.

The Stark Economic Divide Separating the US and Europe

Statistics reveal a sobering picture. Between 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by eighty-seven percent, compared to a mere thirteen and a half percent increase for the European Union. Over this period, EU GDP per capita dropped from over three-quarters to just half of the American figure. Remarkably, even Mississippi now boasts a higher per capita income than major European economies like Italy and France.

Today, roughly 50% of the world’s 50 largest technology firms are US-based, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Innovation Deficit: The Core Question

This widening disparity is driven by superior efficiency gains in the United States, largely due to technological innovation and better use of resources. The landscape of world technology dominance is overwhelmingly American. In the last five decades, 241 US firms have scaled into enterprises valued at more than $10bn, versus only fourteen in the European continent.

This gap raises a vital issue: As the competition for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, what is Europe stand? Experts widely agree it is largely a contest between two involving the US and China, with Europe starting at a clear disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Innovation Gap

A number of key reasons account for this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a far deeper and more dynamic network for financing new ventures. The EU has yet to establish a true unified investment market, which caps the scale of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided rules hamper Europe. A US startup can launch a service under one set of laws to access a market of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a larger population size, is split among 27 separate systems, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on risk-taking vary greatly. In some EU nations, business failure was historically met with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's chronic underinvestment in defense has eroded its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

Despite these challenges, one can find causes for optimism. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have started to advance serious reform. Key analyses on EU competitiveness and the internal market highlight the need for major reforms.

With the right policies and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths could support far greater levels of commercial innovation.

The continent retains considerable strengths: skilled human capital, top-tier schools and universities, and world-class labs. Coupled with a large internal market and substantial household savings, these elements have the potential to trigger a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if the EU does not take the lead in developing next-generation tech, it can still dramatically increase economic output by implementing and tailoring innovations from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

Europe now stands at a decisive moment. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, Europe's technological decline has been gradual. But, if it fails to take bold steps to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could give way to a sudden and irreversible loss of world influence.
