A 60-day journey around the Land Down Under is being halted following the death of an older lady who was left behind by the cruise liner on a distant coastal location.

The elderly woman had been walking on the remote island with fellow passengers from the vessel, but separated from the excursion for a pause. The liner sailed away leaving her and came back after some time after the personnel realised the woman was unaccounted for.

A major rescue mission discovered her body the next day.

Authorities are looking into the event, in coordination with investigators and the official investigator.

Chief Executive of the cruise operator said that guests and staff on the vessel were told that the continuation of the voyage had been terminated due to the "sad loss and prior mechanical issues".

Through an announcement, he further stated that travelers would be provided a total repayment, and said the company was working "to coordinate the travel back of the passengers via specially arranged planes".

Regulatory bodies also issued an updated communication, and said they had "provided a notice to the Captain" prohibiting any new passengers from boarding the ship.

The official said that they would inspect the vessel in Cairns upon its return.

The ship originally sailed from the coastal city on the 24th of October, and was only 48 hours into the expedition at the moment of the elderly woman's demise. The tropical location was the first stop on the journey.
